in fact are forced to move quite often. Some see this as a positive part of military life. Not everyone wants to stay in one town all of their lives
and in fact, the military strongly advertises the fact that members can see the world. At the same time, there are freedoms-inclusive of the freedom of residence-- that are taken
away. Members of the military cannot speak out against the Commander in Chief, which means that they are not supposed to criticize the president. This is arguably a significant difference.
Late night talk shows are fond of making fun of the sitting president and it is every citizens right to engage in free speech, but some of that freedom is
taken away as are other freedoms. One cannot just walk out on the military as one might in a regular job no matter what occurs. This puts soldiers in difficult
positions. There is much public criticism about military behavior, and what they should or should not be doing. Clearly, there are positive and negative aspects of military life. Many
report that the best things to come from military life, or a short stint in the military, is the discipline it instills. Beds must be made precisely. Guns are cleaned.
Everything is done precisely right. They do things like their lives depend on it, because it does. Even in training, there are friendly fire incidents. Soldiers must pay attention or
risk their lives. It sounds like a harsh way to live, but there is a positive result in most cases. One soldier reports that he " cherishes his memories of
military life, the experience of serving in the U.S. Marines and the friends he made, which inspire him in his civilian life" (Eriksen, 2003, p. 1). This same soldier who
