K.C. Carceral, who is currently serving a life sentence, offers a rare, firsthand glimpse into life behind prison bars in Behind a Convicts Eyes. This important textbook corrects common
misperceptions that are the result of an outsiders view and replaces it with perspectives one can only develop from the inside. For the reader, it is in many ways
startling because the reality bears little likeness to the perpetuated fantasy. For example, there is the commonly held belief that all prisoners are regarded as very much the same.
They have all been convicted of a crime and incarceration in this shared maximum-security facility. However, just as there is a class system in society, so, too, is
there within the prison structure. It is an environment that is surprisingly like nature in that it is predicated upon the concept of survival of the fittest. First-time
inmates do not know the laws governing this primitive society, but they must learn quickly in order to survive. The more savvy older inmates have discovered ways in which
the oppressive prison system can be manipulated to their own advantage. As the text points out, corrections officers in these prisons are not always paragons of virtue; they may
use methods of unfair intimidation against certain inmates while allowing the actions of others to go unpunished. This may be due to racist attitudes of the prison guards or
because inmates are bribing them with drugs to look the other way. Another little-known fact the text points out is the importance of material items to the inmates. Survival
