add to that being a teen and perhaps being unwed and with a child, the difficulties increase exponentially. The fact is, that 80% of U.S. families on welfare also
have one or two children, which clearly makes a difficult situation even more difficult (Welfare and Family Size, 2003). Furthermore, for many single teens, the ability to get work
is extremely difficult. This could be do to lack of education, lack of experience, no affordable and reliable day care options, or all of the above. Whats particularly
telling, is that teens in the United States have one of the highest pregnancy rates among industrialized nations, but our welfare system provides the fewest benefits (Welfare and Family Size,
2003). Therefore, once you combine all of these factors, it is clear to see the bleak reality that accompanies most
single teens living on welfare. The teen years "should" be a time of fun, education, opportunity and hope for the future. This is not likely to be the
case for the single teen on welfare. They likely have no access to a quality education, any arent likely to harbor many dreams for the future since the present
seems so hopeless. Furthermore, living in poverty is likely to take its toll in many ways as well. They
may have to live with relatives in order to survive, and/or their home may be unkempt and unsafe due to lack of maintenance. They may not be able to
afford necessities which most teens take for granted, including clothes, food, reliable transportation, a clean and safe home, etc. These basic necessities are likely to constantly be in question,
