could not stand for themselves, and a woman who seemed to never grow tired of trying to make a difference in her world whether she was teaching or fighting in
the government for the rights of people. She was the very first woman, and the first African American, to ever run for President and the first African American woman to
serve in Congress. She possessed a power and a strength that could not be ignored, nor subdued and as such she stands as one of the most powerful women, or
individual for that matter, in American history. The following paper examines the life and work of Shirley Chisholm. Life and Works of Shirley Chisholm
Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm was born in 1924 to "to Barbadian parents, Chisholm was raised in an atmosphere that was both political and religious. Her father was
a staunch follower of the West Indian political activist Marcus Garvey, who advocated black pride and unity among blacks to achieve economic and political power" (Galeschools.com, 2008). She was born
in Brooklyn, New York, and received her education, for the most part, in Barbados (Galeschools.com, 2008). She came back to New York when she was 10 but yet she maintained
that her influential education was received prior to that, under the care of her grandmother in Barbados (Galeschools.com, 2008). It is interesting to note that even as a young child
she seemed perhaps destined to become involved in politics, actually meeting Eleanor Roosevelt when Chisholm was 14. Roosevelt told her, "dont let anybody stand in your way" (Lewis, 2008).
