life and works of Lewis Howard Latimer. Life and Works: Lewis Howard Latimer "Latimer was born on September 4, 1848 in
Chelsea, Massachusetts. His parents were George and Rebecca Latimer, both runaway slaves who migrated to Massachusetts in 1842 from Virginia" (Blackinventor.com, 2006). It is interesting to note that Lewis father
was light skinned enough, when he first escaped, that he passed himself off as a farmer and his wife as his slave (George, 1999). When caught he became quite the
national figure, even being heard in the Supreme Court, and although his owner wanted him back in Virigina an abolitionist purchased him and set him free (Blackinventor.com, 2006).
Latimer served in the Civil War, having forged his papers at the young age of 15 (Bellis, 2006). He ultimately received an
honorable discharge (Blackinventor.com, 2006). After the war he worked in a patent law firm as an office boy (Blackinventor.com, 2006). It was while working in this particular office that he
was recognized as having a talent for drawing patent sketches (Blackinventor.com, 2006). His job as an office boy earned him $3.00 a week but with his new talent he was
