"Garrett Morgan was born on March 4, 1877 in Paris, Kentucky the seventh of 11 children born to Sydney and Elizabeth Morgan" (Blackinventor.com,
2006). His mother had once been a slave but was emancipated (Kentucky Tales, 2006). One of the first things that marks Garrett as a unique individual was his determination to
get a better education, something many African Americans in the south did not even contemplate at the time (Blackinventor.com, 2006). At the age of 14 he actually moved to Ohio,
living in "Cincinnati and then to Cleveland, working as a handyman in order to make ends meet" (Blackinventor.com, 2006). While he was
in Cleveland he learned about how sewing machines work and then opened a store where he sold machines and fixed them in 1907 (Blackinventor.com, 2006). One author notes that when
he was working on sewing machines, before he opened his own store, he developed his first invention which was, "a belt fastener for a sewing machine" (Kentucky Tales, 2006). He
