ensuring the freedoms of the African American people, freedoms that had long been denied. The following paper examines the life and times of Martin Luther King Jr. and then examines
the relevance of his life and work in relationship to the election of Barack Obama as the President of the United States. Life and Times of Martin
Luther King Jr. "Martin Luther King, Jr., (January 15, 1929-April 4, 1968) was born Michael Luther King, Jr., but later had his name
changed to Martin" (Nobelprize.org, 2009). He was essentially born into a family of pastors with his grandfather acting as the pastor of "the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, serving from
1914 to 1931" and then "his father...served from then" on with Martin Luther King Jr. also becoming a co-pastor (Nobelprize.org, 2009). Young
Martin was educated in schools in Georgia that were segregated (Nobelprize.org, 2009). He graduated high school when he was 15 and then went on to receive his B.A. from Morehouse
