Virginia Woolf and James Thurber present two excellent examples of that in their stories of a moth. Woolfs essay "The Death of the Moth" and Thurbers "The Moth and the Star" both tell of hanging on to life by the proverbial thread. Their use of a moth illustrates both the commonplace aspects of life and death . . . as common as a simple moth. They present their readers with observations of the universality of life, observed on an remarkably small scale and the utter totality of death. The overall message, in both Thurbers and Woolfs work, is the admonition that a person must be fully alive and fully determined or else there is little point in life since it will undeniably end in death. "The Death of the Moth" In Woolfs story, a moth is trapped on a window sill on a September morning. For a while it seems content to fly back and forth across the pane. But gradually its contentment turns to desperation as he weakens and is no longer able to make the journey across. The moth is going to die. Woolf shows how that moth represents one tiny and insignificant life that is the be all and end all of one creature. Like the life of most humans, it is both mediocre and glorious. Woolf watches this small and ordinary creature fly against the pane of the window and saw that it looked "as if someone had taken a tiny bead of pure life and decking it as lightly as possible with down and feathers had set it dancing and zigzagging to show us the true meaning of life."
