offer up stories of people in different situations. The stories involve, in one respect or another, the human condition of living and dying. The following paper discusses the two stories
from these thematic positions, comparing and contrasting the two. Life and Death: Mahfouz and Devi In Mahfouzs story the main character
is an individual who is apparently in the process of dying. He sets out looking for the legendary saint Zaabalawi in the hopes that he can cure him of the
disease that is killing him. In Devis story the element of death comes near the end and does not consume the story with its progression. Interestingly enough, however, Mahfouzs story
does not end with death where Devis does. In "Zaabalawi" the dying character encounters many different people in his journey to locate the saint. He is told many stories
of this legendary man, a man who appears and then disappears as no one even knows where he is going or where he has been. In this there is a
very magical quality about the story that revolves around the dying stage of the main character. Towards the end one man he encounters tells him he cannot ask a question
until he is drunk so the main character gets drunk, passes out and then is told that Zaabalawi was there with him all night. This pushes him to seek him
even more passionately and the story ends with him determined he must continue the search. In these respects he is clearly living, and not dying, for his determination will likely
keep him alive, giving him something to seek, and giving him some purpose. Devis story is completely different for it seems to be largely themed on life as the
