of her childhood that inevitably translated into a sense of self to encourage her to take educated risks with her personal and professional careers. She had the opportunity to
achieve a number of firsts in her climb up the broadcast latter, not the least of which included being Nashvilles first black television correspondent and youngest news co-anchor. Her
desire for constantly improving upon herself led to a number of titles and awards such as Miss Black Tennessee, Miss Fire Prevention, public speaking competitions and a college scholarship.
Each stepping stone was a springboard to yet another, better opportunity as she continued to climb the broadcast ladder (Krohn, 2004). Oprah entered life as an illegitimate child whose mother
left her in the care of her grandmother Hattie Mae at age four to search for a more lucrative existence; once she settled in with a good job, she planned
to send for Oprah to join her. It was two years before she left the farm and was reunited with her mother after Hattie Mae took ill, but those
may have been the two most influential years of her life with regard to the childs psychological development. Hattie Mae instilled a number of values in little Oprah that
