contemporary written sources from Jesus own lifetime (Walker, 2004). Every reference to Jesus that has survived the centuries was written long after his death and resurrection. Even during the first
century after Jesus death, there are few sources outside of Christian literature that mention Jesus. The ancient historian Tacitus briefly mentions the title "Christus" and his execution in Judea by
Pontius Pilatus, but does not go into any detail on Jesus life or ministry (France, 2002). Therefore, in order to discuss Jesus life and ministry, one must turn to the
New Testament and the gospel accounts. Osborne (2003) points out that the gospels are "remarkably true to the world of the first century" (p. 5). Therefore, it should be
kept in mind that the gospel writers were principally concerned not only with relating the details of Jesus life and ministry, as they had been passed down orally, but also
with the theological issues and perspectives of their contemporary world. The gospel accounts contain many of the same narratives concerning Jesus life and ministry; however, they also frequently differ in
chronology and content. For example, the story of Jesus supernatural birth is included only in two accounts, and these accounts, in Matthew and John, differ in detail and
thematic content. The whole emphasis of the narrative in Matthew is on scriptures being fulfilled via the life of Jesus (Wright, 1998). For instance, such factors as the angle, the
dream, the command not to be afraid, the righteous couple doing as they were told, are all familiar stylistic elements of other biblical stories (Wright, 1998).
