of happiness. It is a statement put down in the Declaration of Independence and a statement that reflects the essential beliefs and foundations of the United States of America. The
following paper examines each concept separately, utilizing a quote that helps define the word or concept. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness Life
Thomas Jefferson and the Declaration of Independence stated "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their
Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" (The Declaration of Independence, 2007). As can be seen this quote refers to all
three of the concepts being examined. But, it is perhaps in the fact that men are all equal and that the Creator is involved that brings to mind the notion
of life itself. Life is the first thing mentioned in the statement, and life is above all other concepts. Without life all other rights become pointless and futile.
The fact that God created people with such rights relies on the primary foundation of being allowed life. In many ways this seems like
something that most people would not necessarily feel needs to be laid down in stone, so to speak. One would imagine that, of course, all people have the right to
life. But, there are obviously situations where such a concept comes into question such as would relate to people who have taken the life of another, or in recent arguments
concerning the "right to life" as it involves abortion. But, it is in the fact that all people are created equal, and have the right to life, that the nation
