16 and learning to drive are both important milestones for young people. This paper is an essay on these events. Discussion Some so-called "life lessons," according to one source, are
things like " Ive learned that you shouldnt compare yourself to the best others can do, but to the best you can do," and "Ive learned that we are responsible
for what we do, no matter how we feel" (Pendleton, 1998). These sayings at first glance would seem to have little to do with celebrating a 16th birthday and learning
to drive, but if we consider it more carefully, we can see that they are actually words of good advice. First, at 16 all of life is ahead, with all
its opportunities, hopes, dreams, disappointments and dangers. Our society sends some very intense messages; for example, by 16 a young person is supposed to have already decided on a career
and made appropriate plans, either to get into the college that will get them a well paying job, or to find a trade school so they can pursue a "non-professional"
job (like computer repair) that has good potential. Or they are already looking for a position that will allow them to explore other options. It seems that no one in
our society is ever encouraged to finish high school and then take some time to decide what to do next. No "lets tour Europe for a year" or "Im going
to join the Peace Corps for a while" or even "Im going to work at McDonalds and think about what I want to do." We are pushed to make life
changing decisions without adequate time to consider them with the care they deserve. Thats why the first saying above is so vital: we cant compare ourselves to anyone else, nor
