is, a positive integration of the work and personal lives that is emotional fulfilling and achieves their life goals (Reindl, Kaiser and Stolz, 2011). These challenges are particularly problematic for women, as the requirements to obtain a professional level education, which typically means a masters degree or above, and the need to establish oneself in that career come early in life, which is also the optimum years for a woman to bear children. Theories pertaining to work and life integration indicate that these domains are inextricably intertwined (Michel and Clark, 2011). Integration theories fall into two major categories: intentional and unintentional. Intentional integration refers to instances where the relationship between work and life are purposefully altered by the individual whereas unintentional integration describes situations in which the individual is simply affected by the integration of life and work domains (Michel and Clark, 2011). This paper describes how three unintentional integration theories present the integration of life and work across the lifespan for a typical 20-year-old woman. While the approaches of these theories to the problem of integration across the lifespan differ, they all agree on the challenges facing contemporary female professionals and how difficult it is today to balance these life domains. Due to the demands of education, young professionals generally enter the job market in their mid to late twenties and these recent graduates typically are starting their families in their early thirties (Reindl, Kaiser and Stolz, 2011). This means that while they are still working their way up the corporate ladder, they are also coping with the demands of motherhood and small children.
