in determining whether or not someone is lying. The controversy could be divided into pros and cons, as they involve using the lie detectors in various situations. The following paper
examines the two sides of lie detectors. Lie Detectors: Pros & Cons "A polygraph is an instrument that simultaneously records changes in physiological processes such as heartbeat, blood
pressure, respiration and electrical resistance (galvanic skin response or GSR)" (Polygraph ("lie detector"), 2006). In terms of the pros, there is the strong theory that lying itself is a stressful
activity. This stress "can be measured on a polygraph machine" as it "Measures biological functions, such as breathing, pulse and skin response" (Keogh, 2006). It is generally argued that not
many people have the ability to control these particular bodily functions and as such they argue that lie detectors are valid and useful (Keogh, 2006).
Those who argue against lie detectors indicate that the lie detector can measure a persons responses, but that it cannot measure the amount of truth being told (Keogh,
2006). For example, a persons "reactions could be triggered by emotions, such as anger or fear" and "Concerns that medical conditions, including colds and muscle problems, may distort results" (Keogh,
2006). There are also individuals who claim that the use of lie detectors is actually an invasion of privacy (Keogh, 2006). In one respect, concerning some particular cases, it was
argued that, "Allowing the executive branch to submit the legislative branch to lie-detector tests raises constitutional issues of separation of powers" (Vergano, 2002).
