identity, but also remain solidly grounded to a firm ethical foundation in both personal and professional life. From early childhood, it is part of Liberian culture that children not
only learn the skills that they need to know in order to survive, but also the values of their society (Tellewoyan). Liberian culture stresses respect for elders and loyalty to
the values and mores of society (Tellewoyan). As this implies, the value of the extended family is stressed in Liberian culture and takes precedence over a more narrow focus on
the nuclear family. The focus of Liberian cultural values present a departure from the materialistic standards of Western society. For example, security and happiness are thought to be found with
in a family or clan, rather than predicated on building personal success. Happiness and spiritual harmony are values more than the accumulation of wealth. Liberians have traditionally taken great
pride in their sense of "propriety, respectfulness, civility, and orderly behavior" (Whitworth College). These are honorable values that provide good ethical guides for life. From this value system, one is
taught the role of service, a role that is also intrinsic to the medical profession. As this suggests, traditional Liberian values mesh perfectly with the ethical standards as espoused by
many medical professional organizations. Medical professional ethical codes put an emphasis on serving the public good. This paradigm focuses on the importance of team work and professional collaboration, which coincides
