American politics are typically characterized by a radical divide between two ideological camps. These camps are liberalism
and conservatism. In general, conservatism is identified with tradition while liberalism is identified with change. There are, of course, numerous other distinctions between these political philosophies. One
of those distinctions revolves around race. While whites are typically more often conservative, blacks are typically more often liberal. Both conservatives and
liberals have significant impact in our country. Conservative politics, however, have historically powered the world as we know it. They are interwoven not just in our governmental processes
but in practically all of our societal interactions. Not only can conservative politics be equated with power, critics contend they are often a matter of taste, a very one-sided
and ethnocentric taste focusing primarily on the wants of the white middle and upper classes that form the mainstream of American society.
An estimated forty percent of Americans self-identify as conservative (Weil). This compares to only seventeen percent that self-identify as liberal (Weil). As might be expected, whites comprise
the majority of conservatives and blacks comprise a substantial percentage of the liberals. Likewise, most conservatives are Republicans and most liberals are Democrats. While the number can vary
