a complex issue, not least because one is dealing with an ongoing process: it would be as inaccurate to say that global trade is fully liberalised, as it would be
to say that there are significant areas of the global market which have not been affected by liberalisation. In addition, the economic effects of liberalisation will not necessarily be consistent:
we can see positive impacts in some areas, and more negative ones in others, at various stages of the internationalisation process.
At its most basic level, the latter results from increasing knowledge of foreign markets, and as this
is combined with favourable outcomes, the domestic organisation or company makes greater and greater forays into the foreign market. As confidence and security increases, the company is able to make
greater commitments outside the home base. However, the extent to which this occurs is dependent on other factors: some firms will export through independent agents, but make no further inroads
into a foreign market, whereas others will develop their own sales outlets and eventually establish their own manufacturing plant in the target country.
Obviously, much of this process will depend on the extent to which trade barriers,
tariffs and other constraints exist, and how far the "psychic distance" between the two countries can be effectively bridged. In addition, as the WWF (2005) points out, despite the fact
