experiences and perspectives. The following paper offers general research on the three artists. Edmonia Lewis "Edmonias birth is unknown. Different accounts
state she was born in 1840, 1844 or 1845" (Women in History, 2007). She noted once that 1854 was the year of her birth (Women in History, 2007). Her birthplace
is unknown as well Women in History, 2007). By her own accounts she was born to a freed black man who came from the West Indies and a Native American
mother Women in History, 2007). She apparently grew up relatively wild, learning the ways of the natives Women in History, 2007). Above all
she is noted for being the very first Native American and African American sculptress and the very first to ever openly celebrate her ethnicity Women in History, 2007). "Her fame
and artistic achievement shocked and mortified those who claimed that Negroes lacked the capacity for intelligence and fine art, particularly because Edmonia insisted on standing next to her works in
photographs and extensively explaining them" Women in History, 2007). Her subjects of sculpting were often individuals she felt were courageous and important. She sculpted individuals from the abolitionist movement and
