of 1888 there has been a great deal of speculation as to who could possibly be, or have been, Jack the Ripper. One of the most recent suspects is the
famous author Lewis Carroll. The following paper first examines the case of Jack the Ripper, and the numerous suspects, and then examines how and why Lewis Carroll is considered one
of the suspects. Jack the Ripper It is generally believed that Jack the Ripper likely committed more murders than the definitive five. However, "It is generally accepted that he
killed five, though some have written that he murdered only four while others say seven or more. The public, press, and even many junior police officers believed that the Ripper
was responsible for nine slayings" (Jack the Ripper). The five that are generally agreed upon are as follows: "Mary Ann (Polly) Nichols, murdered Friday, August 31, 1888. Annie
Chapman, murdered Saturday, September 8, 1888. Elizabeth Stride, murdered Sunday, September 30, 1888. Catharine Eddowes, also murdered that same date. Mary Jane (Marie Jeanette) Kelly, murdered Friday,
