accompanied by structure, personal integrity, and social integrity conservations plays an important role in the recovery of the patient (Neswick, 1997). Looking at energy conservation is has been noted
by many commentators that the ability to detect fatigue early will allow for intervention to create a more conducive scenario for patent recovery (Tomey, 1998). This in turn will reduce
the level of intervention required and the overall cost of intervention (Schaefer and Potylycki, 1993, Tomey, 1998). The four conservation principles are designed to be used together, to give an
holistic measurement of the patient, energy conservation is only on of these, but it is this we will focus on. Levine(1973) has argued that fatigue will occur when the
energy supplied by the body to heal itself is insufficient to meet the demands placed on it. This will then result in slower healing, but also have an impact on
the psychological or emotional well being of the patient as well as the physical well being (Schaefer and Potylycki, 1993). This may then develop into negative cycle creating greater fatigue
(Levine, 1973). The indications of fatigue are more likely to occur where the patient is unable to adapt to their environment ands condition, this may be in terms of energy
or the other three conservation principles. By observing it is then possible for the nurse to make use of these measurements to determine the best method of intervention while still
treating the patient as a whole. To measure the energy levels and assess the physical symptoms need to be observed. Levine identifies these as aspects that can be measured in
a mostly objective manner. To measure the principles of energy conservation the first measurement may be that of the heart rate. Higher heart rates indicate higher usage of energy. Temperature
