year, there are about 29,000 adults and approximately 2,000 children who are diagnosed with the disease("What you," 2003). The etiology of the disease is not certain (2003). Recent research has
shown that poor air quality is linked to the development of certain childhood leukemias ("Childhood," 2003). This is simply one study. There is a great deal of research being conducted,
but as of today, there is no cure or a definitive answer on what causes the disease. There are several different types of leukemia. Acute lymphocytic or lymphoblastic
cancer occurs most often in children where the chronic lymphocytic variety grows slowly and generally attacks older individuals (Visalli, 1996). The kind named acute myelogenous grows quickly and this also
is more likely to occur in older adults than in children (1996). Finally, chronic myelogenous is a slow growing form of leukemia that affects mostly middle aged men and women
(1996). Common symptoms of the leukemia include easy bruising and bleeding as well as fatigue, pallor, weakness, fever and shortness of breath (Visalli, 1996). Joint pain and abdominal swelling or

disease can be altered. If the disease is not diagnosed and treated when it just begins to manifest, it enters an acute stage and produces more pronounced symptoms along with
a rapid decline in health (1996). Because the disease may in fact mimic other disorders, how does one know when they actually have it? The diagnosis of leukemia is
