Standing on the same soil where bloody battles raged nearly 150 years ago, when conditions are just right
one can almost hear the cannon, the gunfire, the screams of men either as they spur themselves ahead or realize in horror that the blood theyre covered with is their
own. It makes little difference now which side was which; the experience is the same whether the place is Vicksburg, Alamance, Gettysburg, Knoxville, Atlanta, Shiloh or any other major
or minor battleground on which the citizens of America fought each other to the death. We learn much from the letters they wrote
that have been able to survive into our own time. John Walker is a composite Confederate soldier from Tennessee, not at all convinced that he is doing the right
thing. From the eastern part of the state where there are too many mountains to try to grow any corn, his mountain-bred stubbornness lashes out at anything he perceives
as being abuse of authority. His brother Caleb is more pragmatic and chose to travel the route of concession. Caleb is a private in the Union army.
