and an increasing number of students are learning without ever stepping foot in the classroom. Only 30 percent of web-based faculty and 19 percent of non-web-based distance learning
courses see their students once a week or more (NEA, 2006). At the same time, approximately 10 percent of all NEA higher education faculty members teach distance learning classes
or have taught them in the past five years (NEA, 2006). In addition, the NEA has recognized that faculty members in many different types of educat4ional institutions and at
varied levels of expertise have been recruited to each distance learning courses (NEA, 2006). The amount of time that faculty allocates for distance learning is also increasing.
The NEA (2006) reports that half of the faculty members who instruct in distance learning systems spend more hours on these course than their traditional classroom courses, though many
do not receive a reduction in workload or extra compensation spent on their distance learning courses. Questions have been raised, then, about the perceptions of faculty members regarding their
activities in distance learning education, their time commitment to these programs and their satisfaction. Assessing faculty perspectives regarding distance learning and its longevity may help to determine whether there is
a need for continued support for distance learning programs. The survey included in this mailing is designed to assess your perspective as a faculty member regarding the value
and impact of distance learning, both for students and for faculty members. This study will assess the views of 200 educators and address factors like the quality of distance
