I am writing to you from my hospital bed, and because of the severity of my injuries it seems unlikely that I shall leave the hospital save to
go to my grave. I feel that I must make my heartfelt apologies to you before that time comes, for the ways in which I have ill-used you during our
married life and for deserting you in a drunken fit to enlist in the army.
I know that you have suffered greatly in the course of your life and that what befell you as a servant was cruel and demeaning. I also understand
that my own behaviour has made matters worse for you, since my violence and lack of care has also caused great unhappiness to you. When we met, I was
aware that you did not consider me the best of men, and cared about only for superficial things, such as dancing. I knew that you had refused others in the
past and saw me as the worst of all, but still you tried to be a good and honourable wife.
I know that my treatment of you was unforgivable and added to your other burdens of sorrow: although a man has the right to discipline
his wife, so that her life shall be ordered and pleasing in the sight of God, this right was exceeded by my blows and harsh words to you in the
course of our time together. I know that you had prayed to be delivered from the misery which I caused you, and cared not what form that deliverance should take,
