From computers to phones and medical procedures to appliances, there are truly few areas where technological advancement has left intact. One might even argue that electronic mail has changed the way in which people communicate in the twenty-first century, however, there is still a large contingent of people who believe email is a most impersonal and ill-conceived method for expressing oneself and therefore choose to remain loyal to the conventional use of pen, paper and the postal system. One might even argue that electronic mail has changed the way in which people communicate in the twenty-first century, however, there is still a large contingent of people who believe email is a most impersonal and ill-conceived method for expressing oneself and therefore choose to remain loyal to the conventional use of pen, paper and the postal system. Letter writing represents much more than being the antithesis to email communication; rather, it reflects an investment of time and emotional effort that are conspicuously absent from its technological counterpart. Taking the time and making the effort to handwrite a personal note illustrates the level of importance the recipient holds with the sender; to pound out a two-paragraph communication on the keyboard is a shallow, emotionless expression of feelings that cannot compete with colored paper, ink pen, three pages of cursive writing and the overall palpable nature so inherent to a penned letter. "What are the qualities associated with e-mail and cyber-communications? On the positive side there is convenience, speed, informality, directness, ability to bridge great distances, and economy...The downside is more subtle--it includes the positive turned inside out:...informality and convenience strip messages of the emotional markers we value in face-to-face contact and handwritten letters, markers that help us understand one another" (Senauke, 2002, p. 7). As much as contemporary generations condemn the long and often drawn out process of letter writing, older generations cherish one of the few things that still remain unadulterated by the myriad examples of technological progress.
