This is a powerful argument concerning that, in the end, Noras husband seems to be showing signs that he is "getting it" in regards to Nora being more than a simple woman. With that in mind the following paper first presents a brief letter in rebuttal to a friends letter which states Nora should have stayed. The second portion of the paper examines what social message Ibsen may have been presenting to the reader. Nora Needed to Leave All right, so you argue that Nora should have stayed with Torvald and tried to make things work. You said that Torvald pleaded with Nora, now realizing he had been in the wrong somehow, and that he would make it up to her saying that he would change and that he would believe there was hope for them ("But I will believe in it. Tell me! So changed that--?" (Ibsen Act III). That sounds tempting, but how many men do we know who suddenly claim to "get it" when they are being threatened with loneliness? They suddenly seem to realize that the woman they love has been troubled for some time and they, at that instant, feel they would do anything to change it if only she would stay.
