it should be carried out remains a highly debated issue. Lethal injection, for example, is being chosen more and more frequently as a means of taking the life of
an individual convicted to death. Some thirty seven states have opted to use lethal injection in at least some of their executions (Kingsbury, 2007). Recently, however, the Supreme
Court called for a stay in executions utilizing this method (Brant and Brant, 2007). The question of whether death by lethal injection is cruel and unusual punishment is now
occupying the minds of many. To most rational individuals lethal injection would appear to be a far better choice than the various means
that have been used historically to achieve the same purpose. How could lethal injection be considered a cruel and unusual process? Supporters contend that it is the most
human way we have found to end life without causing unnecessary pain and suffering. Indeed, when compared to lethal injection, death by electric chair, hanging, and shooting squad seem
quite morbid! Those, however, have been the primary means that have been used around the world. They are, in fact, more commonly used today in many regions than
is lethal injection. Interestingly, some contend that the reasons death by lethal injection is being considered with so much apprehension is
because the death penalty in general is becoming less and less welcome among those that are charged with having to actually carry out the deed (Brant and Brant, 2007).
