a painless way to ensure an execution. As would be expected, many people argue that there is no true painless way to die and as they are criminals some discomfort is not truly unethical or even perhaps undesirable from the perspective of society. There are also those who would argue that to execute someone is harsh enough and as a human being the individual should be executed as painlessly as possible. With that in mind the following paper first examines the history of lethal injection and a definition/description of the process, and then examines the conditions and controversy today. Lethal Injection: History and Definition Surprisingly enough, the possibility of using lethal injection as a means of execution was first envisioned in 1888 when the state of New York was contemplating such an approach (The Clark County Prosecuting Attorney, 2007). They decided on electrocution instead (The Clark County Prosecuting Attorney, 2007).Almost a century went by before it was actually ever approved of as a means of execution and in the year 1977 "Oklahoma became the first state to adopt lethal injection" (The Clark County Prosecuting Attorney, 2007). It would not be until 1982, in Texas, that the form of execution would be used (The Clark County Prosecuting Attorney, 2007). In relationship to Oklahoma there was a bill which was passed, "written by a young legislator named Bill Wiseman" a man who was not comfortable with the available means of execution in light of the pain and suffering involved (DeathPenalty.org, 2007). "He worked with the state medical examiner, Jay Chapman, to develop a new method - death by injection - that would be less gruesome than electrocution" (DeathPenalty.org, 2007). ...
