Lester Sumrall in his text Demons the Answer Book takes a simpler approach to understanding evil -- a medieval approach, more or less. He states that the Satan, the
Devil, is real, in a very tangible corporal way and that evil is the result of his Satanic minions, demons. In his text, Sumrall describes the spiritual war that
is being waged on the earth between the forces of good and evil. He includes specific instructions on how Christians, who are the only people empowered by God, can wage
war on the Devil and emerge victorious trough the power granted by Jesus Christ to his followers. Sumrall offers instructions on obtaining overcoming faith; how to use prayer as a
weapon; and how to access the power of the Holy Spirit against Satan. Sumrall promises that in following these instructions, the reader will be set free from demonic oppression
and also obtain complete freedom from disease. It is with this last promise that this writer/tutor has a particular problem. One wonders if Sumrall is actually suggesting that when
parents pray for the healing of a innocent, young child and God does not grant their prayer, it is somehow their fault or the childs fault. This sort of theology
of blaming the victim for not being spiritually "pure" is something that goes back to the Middle Ages when the plague was thought to be Gods judgement against humanity, rather
than a pestilence born by rats. In other words, Sumrall asks his readers to ignore the advances in science that have occurred over the last thousand years, and regard all
mental illness, as well as the majority of sociological problems, as the work of "demons." As this suggests, Sumrall insists that the only Christian stance is one
