The United States fought four major wars in the twentieth century (World War I, World War II, Korean War, and the Vietnam War). Each came with numerous lessons that were not only applicable to the time but to the future. Each was declared a preemptive war, the objective of each was to prevent additional wars. Each, of course, failed in meeting this objective. President Woodrow Wilson stated that the goal of World War I was to make the world safe for democracy. This war was purported to be the war to end all wars in fact. In actuality just the opposite result was achieved. Not only did World War I fail to ensure world safety for democracy it had a number of other societal retributions which extended well beyond the end of the war itself (Fussell, 2000). The world was left tremendously unstable, an instability which reflected itself domestically as well as politically. The outcome of World War I, in fact, insured the eventual start of World War II. World War II, in turn, probably resulted in more long-term and far-reaching socio-political and socio-cultural consequences than any other war in history (Sulzberger, 1966). World Peace it seems would be an ever elusive dream and our military exploits in Korea would be just around the corner. Our involvement in Korea too would have more negative than positive consequences. South Korea has been almost solely dependent on the United States for foreign aid since the culmination of the Korean War (Shinn, 1991).
