It occasionally slips into business modes common to other companies, such as entering the food service business it divested some years ago, or entering real estate management (now divested) simply because it has extensive experience in its operation. Though Marriott does not overtly follow external trends except as they can affect its hotel business, it still must be aware of those trends affecting its industry and Marriotts future profitability. Pressure the "make the numbers" each quarter preserve focus on the present. The article contains several points that other companies can take for their own: * Practicing continual improvement: "well never be satisfied with the way things are today. Well continue to improve them to make them better" (Overby, 2003). * Making sound decisions: "You have to stop doing things that arent adding value" (Overby, 2003). * Practicing sound management regardless of external economic conditions: "Even in the good times, you ought to behave like youre in the bad times" (Overby, 2003). * Considering total cost rather than only price: "Reuse if possible, buy if available, and build for competitive advantage" (Overby, 2003). * Plan for the future: "It wasnt raining when Noah started to build the Ark" (Overby, 2003). * Build systems only as a last resort to meet specific needs of the business: Marsha "was a situation in which it was worth it from a competitive standpoint for Marriott to build its own application" (Overby, 2003). * Prohibit the "us vs. them" mentality from becoming ingrained.
