Morocco, Japan, America, and Mexico, and focuses on how cultural differences and attitudes prevent people from effectively communicating with one another, even when lives and happiness are at stake. Moreover,
the interconnected storylines in the film reveal how all humans are complicit in the need to pursue healthy and effective ways to communicate with one another and foster peace.
One of the major conflicts to occur in the film happens in the beginning when a Moroccan goatherder Abdullah purchases a rifle to protect his flock from jackals (Innarritu, 2006).
He gives the rifle to his sons to use, but one of the sons dares the other to fire at a distant tour bus. The younger son takes the dare,
oblivious as to what the consequences will be, and his bullet actually does hit the tour bus, critically wounding an American tourist named Susan. Susan and her husband Richard struggle
to get medical care but have major difficulty because the United States government and the Moroccan government are engaging in a competing conflict management strategy; the strategy is ultimately ineffective
because it leads the two states to be suspicious of one another (America is suspicious that the shooting was a terrorist act), and this prevents Susan from getting the care
that she requires for quite some time. Another major conflict in the story involves the character Chieko, a deaf Japanese girl who is having trouble psychologically coping with the
recent suicide of her mother. She has recently begun to engage in sexually provocative behavior in order to reach out to others. She has had to resort to this because
her fathers efforts to communicate with her after the crisis were ineffective; he adopted an avoidant conflict management strategy that attempting to simply avoid the issue of Chiekos heartbreak, and
