In fact, this sweep destroyed many lives and while this sort of corruption outrage occurs throughout the country, some question why politicians cannot accept a tip or a little cash if the job gets done right. It is rather Machiavellian to suggest that the ends justify the means and that politicians do not necessarily need to work within the letter of the law. Examples of these things include Iran Contra, but clearly there is a problem if one is not able to act within the scope of the law. A good example is Tammany Hall days when a corrupt system would emerge within the confines of New York. While that is an example of what not to do, it seems that Plunkitt was a politician who saw fit to use his pull and knowledge and he makes no bones about it. George Plunkitt was someone who believed that even if he benefitted by his political pull, that is okay, as long as he does good for the city overall (Riordan, 1995). The perks are a part of the deal. He gives an example by saying that if he knew a bridge was being built, he should buy land around it and asks the reader if they would not do the same thing (1995).
