This compelling book entitled Flivver King demonstrates all of these things. Of course, Sinclair (1984) shows and does not tell. He demonstrates through his characters-through the lives of Henry Ford
and Abner Shutt-- that there is a great divide in America. Of course, there are subtleties and not a clear black and white distinction. After all, many people in the
book who are not rich think they are living the good life, at least for a time, but as the work unfolds, the reader learns that there are problems in
society. There is a great divide and the solution does not seem to be in arms reach. The book is above all about life in the capitalist system. Sinclair
is a political icon in addition to a writer and supports the socialist ideal. In this work, that sentiment comes out, but once again, through characterization, the subtle nature of
the differential is conveyed. There is a clear connection made between industrialization, the Depression and Fordism. They are each concepts in their own right that many can relate to historically.
