diabetic patients need and the daily, ongoing care that they need to provide for themselves. Program Description The program provides an overview of
diabetes to newly-diagnosed patients. It will include information they will need to take care of themselves, bring their diabetes under control and maintain that control, while also providing information
about why they need to achieve and maintain control of their disease. Potential learners are newly-diagnosed patients and their families. Learners will
be adults at and beyond midlife, at the ages at which Type II diabetes most commonly develops. Rationale for the program is that
patients need to understand all of the implications of diabetes that they have the ability to control. Entry requirements include referral to the class and the presence of Type
II diabetes. The Program The hospital will provide the Learning Environment. Class participants will be patients admitted to the hospital for any
reason, who are newly diagnosed with Type II diabetes. The primary purpose will be to impress upon these patients the critical need for them to bring their diabetes under
control and then maintain that control over time. Learning goals include: * Examine how the diabetes diagnosis affects patients lives. * Explore innovative means of managing required lifestyle changes.
