way. The lesson focuses on the use of small group instruction based on leveled reading groups and can be modified to address the learning needs of learners with special
needs, including ELLs or learners with low reading performance levels. A differentiated instruction approach can be used with this lesson plan, by giving learners information, including examples and concepts
related to the story, prior to the onset of the reading group. In order to effectively design and implement the lesson plan, it was necessary to be skillful
in assessing students (Morris, 2008). One of the components of this is to create learning groups based on the use of leveled reading activities and the corresponding assessments, and
then grouping learners with similar performance levels. This was the first step in the implementation of the lesson plan based on the use of homonyms in a text. The
book Amelia Bedelia is broken down contextually by events, and so the stopping points in the lesson were designed to reflect the conclusion of those events. Each event is
distinguished by an experience the main character has in relation to confusion over the use of a homonym. For example, Amelia Bedelia is asked to draw the drapes (close
them), but she draws them (using paper in pen). Amelia Bedelia is asked to dust the furniture (meaning to take the dust away), but she believes it means to
put dust on the furniture. Amelia Bedelia is asked to dress the meat (cut the fat off and prepare it for cooking) when it arrives, and she puts clothing
