of information supporting the choices made in the attached lesson plan. The lesson plan is that which has been designed to provide a day of continuing education for nurses
and other care givers at a long term care facility. The topic is infection control in such a facility, one that superficially can appear to be one that should
require no additional or continuing education. There have been several advances in infection control in the past several years, however. Not all of the care-giving staff at the
long term facility possesses the same level of technical training, and those who have the most extensive training generally are older nurses who completed their formal training some years ago.
Need and Rationale for Selection Several new methods of infection control in the long term
care setting exist now. Additionally, the problem of bacterial resistance is one that has come to light rather recently. This is a problem that is expected to intensify
in the future. Highlighting the growing problem of bacterial resistance is a reasonable approach to creating heightened awareness of the need for infection
control in the long term care setting. Avoidance of infection is preferable over the need for cure, and also has the effect of increasing residents quality of life.
Results of a needs assessment survey indicate that most nurses at this facility would be open to gaining additional training in controlling infection in
the facility. Some of the youngest understand they have not been trained completely and in such a way as to act as a protective barrier against infection.
