Perce, the tribe that has numerous members in Washington and Oregon, and indeed much of the action of the novel is centered on the Columbia River. Dannys wife Loxie (Jacks
mother) is dead, killed in a road accident in Nebraska where she and Jack were living with Loxies second husband (Lesley, 1999). Jack has been "rodeoing" but its a hard
life, and Danny wants to reconnect with his son and with the traditional ways of the tribe, which he also wants to pass on to Jack. But first, Danny has
to understand it himself. One of the most important episodes in the book occurs when Danny has a vision of a massacre of Chinese railroad workers (an event that actually
took place) (Lesley, 1999). The vision is frighteningly real, and Danny, encouraged by old Willis Salwish, decides to talk to a medicine woman about it (Lesley, 1999). He is thus
drawn more deeply into a consideration of his culture and what it means-though he distrusts the woman and her "powers." Jack is 17 when he and his father are
