the child or children? There is no middle ground on this sensitive issue, to be sure, with impassioned opinions occupying both sides of the ideological spectrum. According
to Ken Connor, President of the conservative organization known as the Family Resource Council, "Much of the science and rhetoric that homosexual activists are using to oppose the Florida law
is faulty at best and in many cases untrue" (Rosie v. the Facts About Gay Adoption, 2002). The right-wing Republican conservative and Christian fundamentalists have been adamantly opposing lesbian
couples adopting children for years, who argue that it is a viable alternative to place the approximately 500,000 children currently in foster care into loving homes (Rosie v. the Facts
About Gay Adoption, 2002). According to the opponents, only about 20 percent of these foster children ever become legitimate candidates for adoption, and Connor maintains that instead of allowing
lesbian couples to adopt, "State governments should seek to reduce the bureaucracy which prevents married couples from more easily adopting these children awaiting a family" (Rosie v. the Facts About
Gay Adoption, 2002). Furthermore, Connor insists that states "should refrain from enacting policies which intentionally deprive children of having both a mother and a father, because scientific studies prove
that those situations are not in the best interest of the children involved" (Rosie v. the Facts About Gay Adoption, 2002). Those who oppose lesbian couples adopting children have relied
