As the novel opens, Jean Valjean has just been released from prison. He has spent the last nineteen years of his life working in the galleys because he tried
to steal a loaf of bread for his sisters hungry children. Having finally obtained his freedom, Valjean is still not free because he is condemned by everyone he meets due
to his yellow passport, which identifies him as an ex-convict. He cannot obtain lodging or food, even though he has the money to pay for both. Valjean has
long pondered his situation. He recognizes that it was foolish to steal a loaf of bread that probably would have been given to him if he had asked. However, he
also recognizes that the "penalty was not equivalent to the...crime" (Hugo). Considering all aspects of his situation, Valjean had "judged society and condemned it. He condemned it in his hatred"
(Hugo). As this demonstrates, the only effect that nineteen years of mistreatment has had on Valjean is to turn this kind-hearted man into a hardened, desperate character. Valjean is in
this mindset when he meets M. Myriel, a priest. Myriel treats Valjean with kindness and offers him hospitality, a place to sleep and food. However, Valjean returns this kindness
by stealing his silver. When he is caught and Myriel covers for him, saying that the silver was a gift, it redeems Valjeans soul and he becomes a changed man.
