content, but are similar in that each text conveys in-depth insight into the life of teenage gang members. Bings text is a first person account of a journalists experience investigating
and interviewing gang members of the most notorious gangs in America, the Crips and the Bloods. Therefore, in Bings book, the reader hears the voices of gang members and learns
their stories from their persona points of view. Youth Gangs in American Society, as its more formal name implies, is a sociological study that not only summarizes the authors empirical
research, but offers a background history of the topic and the various ways that it has been regarded by scholars studying this field. Bings approach is completely different as
she comes at it from the perspective of journalism. This means that one of Bings principal goals is to engage the reader emotionally with her subject. She accomplishes this by
offering narrative in which she actively encourages the reader to empathize with the adolescents sent to Californias juvenile detention camps. There are three in the Los Angeles area, Miller, Kilpatrick
and Gonzalez. In describing the trip from L.A. to Campus Kilpatrick, Bing puts the reader, literally, in the shoes of a young delinquent. On this trip, she writes, "If
youre that thirteen or fourteen-year-old kid youre probably sitting quietly, trying to wind your thoughts into as tight a package as you can. You probably go back over what
got you a ticket for this ride in the first place" (Bing 4). This leads into a discussion of the various offenses that are typical of juveniles sentenced to Kilpatrick.
