membrane at the back that "reflects light back reflects light back o the retina after it has already passed though" the eye (Grella 31). This feature gives their eyes their
characteristic glow and its purpose is to increase the ability of lemurs to see at night (Grella 31). There are more than 60 different kinds of lemurs and scientists
are still discovering new species (Ebersole 18). For instance, during the summer of 2005, scientists identified two new species (Ebersole 18). Geography A puzzle that continues to intrigue scientists
is when did lemurs first arrive on the island of Madagascar, which is the only geographical location in which they are found today (Weir 16). While scientists have unearthed the
remains of animals who are close relatives to lemurs, the lorises, in both Africa and Asia, until recently, no fossil evidence of lemurs existing outside of Madagascar were found-until quite
recently. In 2002, a French scientist found a fossil indicating that lemurs lived in Pakistan, which dates it as prior to Madagascar breaking off from the Indian subcontinent roughly 88
million years ago (Weir 16). One theory on how lemurs came to Madagascar is that some of their number was "washed from the African mainland into the Indian Ocean more
than 60 million years ago" and had the good luck to survive and wash ashore onto Madagascar (Conniff 102). Habitat The vast majority of lemurs are arboreal, which means
