Industrial Revolution was presenting more opportunities for "information dissemination which increased leisure awareness and options and this trend has continued up to the present" (Mundy, et al, 1992, p. 50).
In other words, the roller coaster ride of change that our society is still engaged in started with this period in the late nineteenth century. Technological innovation brought change to
the way people earned their living, conducted their lives and enjoyed their leisure-time. It can also be argued that having leisure gave people the opportunity to reflect on the socioeconomic
inequalities inherent in the capitalistic system at that time and, therefore, added leisure-time eventually resulted in social activism and social change. The
inventions of the nineteenth century are so taken for granted today that it is easy to forget that these inventions were revolutionary in their day and greatly altered American society.
The telephone, for instance, was viewed with a great deal of suspicion when it was first introduced as social critics feared that it spelled the end of face-to-face communication (Stone,
1995). There were both positive and negative social side effects of the new technology brought by the Industrial Revolution. On one hand,
while people still worked long hours within new factories, the fact is that for many the advent of the Industrial Revolution meant that they had more leisure and more money
