It cannot be argued that the concept of leisure, and the way that leisure activities are structured, has changed radically in Britain over the past two centuries. This is not only a result of the development of new technologies - the emergence of cinema, and later television and video, had a marked impact on the publics patterns of leisure activities, for example - but also reflects much wider instances of social and cultural change. It would not be overstating the case to say that the concept of leisure is entirely different, in the present day, from the way it was perceived in the nineteenth century. Clark (2004) asserts that these changes took place in two distinct phases, from 1700 to 1850 and from 1850 to the present day, and that the Industrial Revolution was in great part responsible for what he refers to as the "leisure revolution" (Clark, 2004, PG). During the earlier period, the kind of leisure activities undertaken by small rural communities, in which most of the population lived, tended to be integrated with the agricultural year and seasonal change. In a society where agriculture is a priority and employment patterns are dependent upon it, leisure is not only constrained by the amount of "spare time" which is available and the points in the year at which it occurs, there is little opportunity for the development of leisure activities which are not directly connected to the life of the community.
