outer and inner stimuli present in the metropolis. Because mans function within this metropolis includes the processing of these stimuli, and because man differentiates between the different forms of
stimuli, the constant motion of the metropolis requires man to differentiate from moment to moment. The constant, frenetic life of the metropolis is defined by movement, momentary transformations, new
and differentiated stimuli and constant repetition. Man, then, is stimulated in the metropolis by the process of differentiating between an impression that occurs one moment and the impression that
immediately preceded it (Simmel, 1950, p. 410). Simmel (1950) argues, then, that there are specific psychological conditions that are created from life in the metropolis, that are based in variations
of impressions, the creation of regular or habitual stimuli and the "rapid crowding of changing images," which create "sharp discontinuity in the grasp of a single glance" (p. 411).
In other words, there is a level of the unexpected and an onrushing of experiences in the metropolis that create a kind of life "tempo" that is inherently frenetic (Simmel,
1950). This creates a different consciousness from rural life that can be assessed through a comparative view of the "rhythm of life and sensory mental imagery" (Simmel, 1950).
People seek out leisure activities, especially leisure activities that remove individuals from the frenetic metropolis because of a need for a psychological "break." Rural life has a slower
pace for sensory imagery, a more habitual nature and a slower pace to the distribution of sensory information that allows for a deeper sense of self and deeper pursuit of
