A number of situations sometimes warrant acts of violence. Indeed, legitimate forms of violence could be equated with justice in more than one
instance. This contention can be illustrated using history but it can also be illustrated using works of fiction. Two of the most noteworthy historical references are provided by
Thomas Jefferson and Adolf Hitler. Fictional support for the contention that legitimate violence equals justice can, in turn, be found in Mary Shelleys "Frankenstein" and the recent "Lord of
the Rings" film. In many ways, in fact, these works of fiction reflect the very real social conditions of the time which could be contended to have warranted violence.
J.R.R. Tolkiens "Lord of the Rings", the book upon which the recent movie was based, was written during a time of world war.
First started as a series of letters to his own son while he served in World War II, "Lord of the Rings" presents a very potent reminder of
the necessity of violence to bring about justice. In the movie a great eagle flies from the west rejoicing over the fall of the Tower of Anor and the
end of the realm of Savron. He encourages the people to: "Sing and rejoice,
ye people of the Tower of Guard, for your watch has not been in vain. The black gate is broken, and your king has passed through and he is victorious".
