cognizant of security in todays electronic age, it seems that in the health care industry, legislation looms large. There are laws protecting patients privacy and HIPAA is one of the
largest governmental projects to come along in ages. Many are familiar with the myriad of forms that have to be signed related to HIPAA. Patients of physicians and drug store
patrons must sign these huge forms, but they do serve as protection even though it has made for a good amount of paperwork. For hospital staff, and for nurses in
particular, these laws have become rather tedious and affect patient care to some extent. Nurses have become very political. It pays to note that in 1991 the nursing association backed
Clintons policies but the HSA never came to fruition for a number of reasons (Mason, Chaffee & Saunders, 2002). Yet, nurses have remained active and in fact, "...nursing has been
in the forefront of the community empowerment movement" (Reinhard et al., 1996 as cited in Mason, Chaffee & Saunders, 2002, 6). Authors explain that nursing as a profession is becoming
very political indeed (2002). With the many frightening scenarios of identity theft in the medical community from physician impersonation to the advertising of a celebritys medical information and so on,
there has been prompt attention to security by the law. There are many situations where privacy is of the utmost importance and law does get into the picture. In the
case of Rush Limbaugh, for example, the charges of "doctor shopping" might have been truncated by a more tedious electronic system of recording patient data. Also, in his case, because
of the notoriety of the celebrity, a breach in security could have been disastrous. If information was leaked by a nurse for example, or through the computer databases, the hospital
