Canada, like many other nations, are coming to realize that a sort of prohibition against marijuana is not going to work. People will continue to grow and smoke marijuana whether
or not it is legal. The following paper examines the issue of legalizing marijuana in Canada and argues that it should be legalized. Legalizing Marijuana in Canada It
was in 2001 that the controversy began to see decisions made, one way or another, in the political system of Canada. This controversy as it involves those who want to
see marijuana legalized, has been attempting to change the law for some decades now. Back in 1972 "Parliament undertook a similar inquiry" to the one in 2001 wherein the result
was the "LeDain Commission report which recommended they repeal the prohibition against the simple possession of cannabis" (NORML). The report was generally ignored by Parliament despite the fact that
opinions polls demonstrated that the support for the legalization of marijuana was constantly growing and has actually doubled since that date (NORML). The Executive Director of NORML, R. Keith Stroup,
stated that both the political and public attitude towards the legalization of marijuana is greatly "skewed" (NORML). One Conservative leader in Canada, Clark, stated that he strongly supported
the legalization and decriminalization of marijuana because he believed that people who were charged with pot should not have a criminal record (NORML). "I believe the least controversial approach is
decriminalization because its unjust to see someone carry the stigma to be barred from studying medicine, law, architecture or other fields where a criminal conviction could present an obstacle...My opinion
