argue that it should never be legalized for any reason whatsoever. Others argue that it should be legalized, but only in the medical community and thus used only as a
prescription drug. And, still others believe that the dangers associated with marijuana are far less than alcohol or tobacco and as such should be legalized. And, there are those who
argue that legalizing marijuana would provide the country with a powerful economic resource that is currently only affecting the economy of the black market. Bearing that in mind the following
paper examines the pros and cons associated with legalizing marijuana for medical purposes. Pros and Cons Much of the argument against legalizing marijuana for medical purposes appears to
be related to the general struggle concerning the legalizing of marijuana all around. As one author indicates, "Regrettably, the cause of medical marijuana suffers from the association of groups that
want to decriminalize all marijuana use" (Knight Ridder/Tribune News Service, 2002; p. K2446). In essence, much of the argument keeping marijuana from becoming legal in the medical industry is related
to a fear that marijuana will then become legal in all aspects. From this perspective we see that those against the legalizing of marijuana in the medical industry do
not want to see this step being the first of many that would, as they see it, ultimately endanger society through the legalization of a drug. In addition, there
are those who feel that marijuana is not as helpful as it is harmful. Such arguments are further backed by such findings as follows: "Marijuana contains 50 percent more carcinogens
than tobacco, a study from the British Lung Foundation concludes. A Smoking Gun? also says that the THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) levels in cannabis have increased since the 1960s. It is vital
